Looking for a purposeful way to help students tackle multi-digit addition and subtraction with confidence and strong mental maths strategies?
This resource is designed to explicitly teach students how to use the jump strategy on an open number line to solve addition and subtraction problems. By making jumps on a number line, students learn to break numbers apart, bridge through tens and hundreds and use place value to calculate efficiently and accurately.
Rather than relying on counting by ones or rote algorithms, students use intentional jumps to model their thinking. This supports flexible strategy choice, strengthens number sense, and helps students explain how and why their solution works. Each problem encourages reasoning, efficiency, and a deeper conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction.
