Description
This is a visual way for students to learn about Open and Closed Syllable words. It supports students in the classroom and allows for you to work on decoding open and closed syllable words.
There are 7 syllable types in total and this resource focuses on 2:
- Open Syllables
- Closed Syllables.
Students must know the difference between short vowels and long vowels before introducing this concept.
When the door is OPEN, the vowel is not trapped by a final consonant and the vowel can run away- the vowel shouts its name (or long vowel sound).
If the door is CLOSED the vowel is trapped by a consonant and cannot run away- the vowel says its short vowel sound.
This resource includes open syllable words with 2 or 3 phonemes such as hi or sto.
This resource supports students when learning about Open and Closed Syllables. This resource includes closed syllable words with 3 or 4 phonemes such as hit or stop.
It must be opened in PowerPoint. For animations to work, please play during the slideshow tab.
