Description

The BFG, written by Roald Dahl, is a great book to target vocabulary development. These mini posters are organised by chapters with six to an A4 page (144 Mini Posters in total). The creative pseudowords in the book are a great source for syllabication, but they are not included in this product.

Each poster has a discreet label for organisational purposes. The target word is obvious, followed by the part of speech category it belongs to in the context of the story. I have added an explanation for adjectives and adverbs because I have found my students get confused by these terms more than any other.

The definition has been refined to reflect the meaning intended by the author (my interpretation), and the extract from the story will contribute to comprehension and retention to extend vocabulary. You could use them as a stimulus for creative writing.

The words used are:

Ch. 1: dormitory, lenses, silvery, lavatory, resist, deathly

Ch. 2: shadowy, withdrew, glimpse, carefully, devilish, peer

Ch. 3: snaking, clamped, whisked, imprisoned, flashing, smothered

Ch. 4: curious, whipped, desolate, craggy, glistening, cavern

Ch. 5: stammered, patriotism, peculiar, sternly, triumphantly, appetite

Ch. 6: exist, hullabaloo, fiery-hot, squinting, motionless, fierce

Ch. 7: orphanage, suspiciously, comfortably, transfigured, swivelled, offended

Ch. 8: contemptuously, perambulator, girth, coarse, knobbles, winsome

Ch. 9: gruesome, repulsive, frankfurters, ghastly, embedded, passionately

Ch. 10: conducting, inevitably, reverberated, patiently, politely, ecstasy

Ch. 11: skulking, intercept, vying, phenomenal, knifing, vapour

Ch. 12: intently, anguish, distressed, exasperated, emerged, invisible

Ch. 13: occurred, grotesque, repulsive, diabolical, convulsions, flailing

Ch. 14: gravely, resumed, laborious, solemnly, translucent, oblong

Ch. 15: aghast, proudly, confidently, famished, horrid, obviously

Ch. 16: scurried, pulsing, overlapping, thrashing, scarlet, curtsy

Ch. 17: reclining, crevice, cautiously, murky, monstrous, encounter

Ch. 18: massive, glimmer, speechless, unexpectedly, withdrawing, watchful

Ch. 19: absurdity, composure, mysteriously, fiasco, crystal, petrified

Ch. 20: disdainful, imposing, decisive, supreme, mahogany, damask

Ch. 21: military, wretches, approve, presume, grudgingly, pinpoint

Ch. 22: thundering, frantically, godforsaken, vast, anxiously, grotesque

Ch. 23: mobilized, contrivance, ceaselessly, perpendicular, trussed, everlasting

Ch. 24: gratitude, horrendous, literally, modest, telegrams, disasters
