Tricky Word Code – Hands-On Sight Word Activity

Make learning tricky words fun, interactive, and engaging with Tricky Word Code! This hands-on literacy resource encourages students to recognise, match, and read high-frequency tricky words through a simple coding game that builds confidence and automatic word recognition.

Students choose a Tricky Word Code Card and carefully arrange the loose tricky word cards onto their blank grid to match the pattern shown. Once they have successfully "cracked the code," they read each of the tricky words aloud to reinforce recognition, fluency, and recall.

The activity is designed for repeated practice and encourages students to look closely at each word while developing visual memory and reading confidence.

Perfect for:

  • Literacy rotations or centres
  • Small group instruction
  • Partner activities
  • Independent practice
  • Early finishers
  • Reading intervention
  • Morning tubs
  • Homeschool learning
  • Fast finisher tasks

What's Included:

  • Blank coding grids
  • Tricky Word Code cards with completed word patterns
  • Individual tricky word cards for students to manipulate and match
  • Colour-coded tricky word sets following the InitiaLit Foundation sequence for easy organisation

Why You'll Love It:

  • Builds automatic recognition of tricky words
  • Encourages careful visual discrimination
  • Reinforces reading fluency through repeated practice
  • Supports independent, partner, and small-group learning
  • Quick and easy to prepare—simply print, laminate, and play!
  • Durable and reusable year after year
  • Suitable for classroom and homeschool settings

This resource has been created to support classrooms using the InitiaLit Foundation program, with tricky words following the Foundation sequence and colour coded to match the program. This makes it easy to introduce and reinforce words as students progress through each stage of learning.

However, Tricky Word Code can just as easily be used as a standalone sight word resource, making it suitable for any classroom, intervention program, tutoring session, or homeschool environment. The engaging format provides valuable practice for any child learning high-frequency words, regardless of the literacy program being used.

Please note: This is an independently created resource designed to complement the InitiaLit program. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by MultiLit or the InitiaLit authors.

Simple to prepare, engaging to play, and packed with meaningful reading practice, Tricky Word Code is a versatile literacy resource that children will love. Whether used independently, with a partner, in literacy centres, or at home, it provides a fun and effective way to build confidence and automatic recognition of tricky words.
