THE STORY INSIDE
Joseph Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1924 to 1953. He ran the country with an iron grip - people who disagreed with him, or who failed to do what he asked, faced serious punishment.
In 1928, he launched the first Five Year Plan: a push to rapidly build Soviet industry. Workers across the country - including coal miners - were given production targets and a promise. Hit the target, and you'll be rewarded with better food, housing, and pay. The deal was clear.
The miners hit the target. Stalin raised it.
The original goal was 35 million tonnes of coal. When workers reached it, Stalin raised the target to 70 million. When they pushed to reach that, he raised it to 95 million. Then 152 million. Each time the miners met the goal, the goalpost moved - and the promised rewards never came.
A miner named Alexei and his crew kept working under these conditions, because stopping wasn't really a safe option under Stalin. But the deal they'd been promised was never honoured. The target simply kept moving.
The pack closes with the one line that names what's happening every time: "We agreed on one condition. I met it. Either we go back to that original agreement, or I need you to admit the deal has changed." Because the finish line keeps moving for a reason - and naming that reason out loud is the only way to stop running.
