A mysterious locked box appears outside the classroom.

No one knows who left it there. There are no instructions. Strange symbols are drawn on the side, a piece of blue thread is caught in the lock, and the clues do not point to one obvious answer.

What is inside the box? Why was it left there? And should it be opened?

The Mystery Box is an engaging, open-ended critical thinking scenario that challenges students to investigate clues, develop competing theories, distinguish evidence from assumptions, and revise their thinking when new information appears.

Designed for Grades 3–8, this low-prep thinking challenge encourages students to look beyond their first idea and build explanations that are supported by evidence.

There is no single correct solution. Students must investigate, reason, question, justify, and rethink.
