How to Play: Tricky Word Code… See it, match it, read it! Tricky Word Code is a fun and engaging game that helps children recognise, read, and remember tricky words. Each student needs: A 9 × 9 Blank Grid A 9 × 9 Tricky Word Board A set of Tricky Word Cards Shuffle the Tricky Word Cards and place them face down. (You might choose to keep them face up) Turn over one Tricky Word Card. Read the word and see if you have it on your word board and which position it is in. If you do not have it on your word board place it back on the table and miss a turn. Find each matching tricky word and place it in the same position on your blank grid. Continue until your blank grid matches the Tricky Word Card exactly. When you have finished, read all of the tricky words aloud from your completed grid. Shuffle the cards and play again with a new pattern. For a challenge use the 4 x 5 grid. As children play, they strengthen their visual recognition of tricky words, improve reading fluency, and build confidence through repeated practice. The more they play, the more familiar these important words become! -Tas font These Tricky Word Match games have been created to complement the InitiaLit program used in our school. The tricky words are introduced in the same sequence as the program, making it easy for children to practise and reinforce the words they are learning in class. These tricky words are introduced during the Foundation/Prep year, providing an excellent opportunity for children to build strong early reading skills. The games can also be used beyond Foundation/Prep to consolidate learning, strengthen automatic word recognition, improve reading fluency, and build confidence through ongoing practice. Ideal for both the classroom and home, these engaging games provide repeated exposure to high-frequency tricky words in a fun, hands-on way. Words included: I, is, the, A, my, a you, they, to, was, that we, said, are, she, be, he, me one, has, were, look there, his, her, them with, ha… [truncated]
