# EYLF Outcome 2: Children Are Connected With and Contribute to Their World

> EYLF V2.0 Outcome 2 in plain words: community, diversity, fairness and sustainability, with examples by age, observation examples and resources.

## EYLF Outcome 2: Connected With and Contributing to Their World

Outcome 2 of the [Early Years Learning Framework V2.0](https://www.acecqa.gov.au/sites/default/files/2023-01/EYLF-2022-V2.0.pdf) is about children as members of a community. It covers four ideas: belonging to groups and communities, respecting diversity, noticing what is fair, and caring for the environment.

V2.0 made two things much more visible in this outcome. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, Country and language now run through the examples, and sustainability is now also one of the framework's principles.

Below are community and culture resources from Australian educators, the four sub-outcomes in plain words, what they look like at each age, and observation examples. For the full framework, see my [EYLF learning outcomes guide](/teacher-guides/eylf-learning-outcomes).

## The Four Sub-Outcomes of Outcome 2

### 2.1 Children develop a sense of connectedness to groups and communities and an understanding of their reciprocal rights and responsibilities as active and informed citizens

Children see themselves as part of their family, their room, the service and the wider community. They learn they have rights, like being heard, and responsibilities, like helping to look after shared things. The framework lists the **7Rs of sustainability** among the examples here: reduce, reuse, recycle, respect, repair, reflect and refuse.

### 2.2 Children respond to diversity with respect

Children notice differences in culture, language, family and ability, and respond with interest rather than fear. They explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and learn that there are many ways of living and being.

### 2.3 Children become aware of fairness

Children notice when something is unfair, to them or to someone else, and start to say so. They begin to include others and to understand how words and actions can hurt.

### 2.4 Children become socially responsible and show respect for the environment

Children care for plants, animals and places, and see themselves as part of nature. The 7Rs fit here too, in everyday habits like composting, reusing paper and fixing what breaks.

> **Note:** The numbers 2.1 to 2.4 are a common shorthand in services. The EYLF lists the sub-outcomes without numbers.

ACECQA also publishes an [EYLF V2.0 learning outcomes information sheet](https://www.acecqa.gov.au/sites/default/files/2023-07/InformationSheet_EYLF-Outcomes%20Information%20Sheets.pdf) with reflective questions and practice examples.

## What Outcome 2 Looks Like at Different Ages

### Babies

- Watching other babies with interest and reaching out to them
- Responding to songs and greetings in their home language
- Feeling the grass, sand and leaves on time outside

### Toddlers

- Joining a small group to water the garden or feed the chickens
- Noticing that a friend's family speaks a different language at pick-up
- Saying "my turn" and, with support, "your turn"
- Putting rubbish in the bin or the compost with a reminder

### Preschoolers

- Talking about the people and places in their community: the library, the shops, the park
- Asking questions about other families, cultures and celebrations
- Saying "that's not fair" and explaining why
- Sorting recycling, using both sides of the paper, fixing a torn book
- Learning words from the local Aboriginal language and the name of the Country the service is on

### Experiences that support Outcome 2

- A community walk, and dramatic play set up as a shop, vet or post office
- Acknowledgement of Country, said together each day
- Gardens, worm farms, compost and recycling sorting
- Group decisions, like voting on a name for the service pet or the next project
- Celebrations and stories from the families of the children in your room (see [Harmony Week activities](/teacher-guides/harmony-week-activities) and [NAIDOC Week activities](/teacher-guides/naidoc-week-activities))

## Observation Examples for Outcome 2

These are made-up examples to show the shape: what the child did, what it shows, which sub-outcome, and what comes next.

**Baby (11 months):** *When the group sang the hello song, Noah turned to each child as their name was sung and clapped when he heard his own. Noah is beginning to see himself as part of the group (Outcome 2, connectedness to groups and communities). Next: add family photos to the hello song so each child sees their own family too.*

**Toddler (2):** *Lily saw that Ari had no bucket in the sandpit and gave him hers, then found another for herself. Lily is noticing what others need and acting on it (Outcome 2, becoming aware of fairness). Next: name the kind act back to her and keep enough buckets out for two at a time.*

**Preschooler (4):** *After morning tea Jack sorted the scraps into the compost bin and told a friend "worms eat this, not plastic". This shows Jack understands a simple way to care for the environment (Outcome 2, respect for the environment). Next: start a worm farm the children help feed and check each week.*

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is EYLF Outcome 2?

Outcome 2 of the [EYLF V2.0](https://www.acecqa.gov.au/sites/default/files/2023-01/EYLF-2022-V2.0.pdf) is Children are connected with and contribute to their world. It covers belonging to groups and communities, respecting diversity, becoming aware of fairness, and caring for the environment.

### What are the sub-outcomes of EYLF Outcome 2?

There are four: children develop a sense of connectedness to groups and communities and an understanding of their reciprocal rights and responsibilities as active and informed citizens; children respond to diversity with respect; children become aware of fairness; and children become socially responsible and show respect for the environment.

### What are the 7Rs of sustainability in the EYLF?

EYLF V2.0 lists seven: reduce, reuse, recycle, respect, repair, reflect and refuse. They appear in the Outcome 2 examples for connectedness to groups and communities, and they sit naturally alongside caring for the environment.

### What changed in Outcome 2 in EYLF V2.0?

The first sub-outcome now talks about connectedness rather than belonging to groups and communities, and about active and informed citizens. The examples now include much more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, caring for Country and using local language, and the 7Rs of sustainability.

### What activities support EYLF Outcome 2?

Community walks, dramatic play as a shop or vet, Acknowledgement of Country, gardening, worm farms, recycling sorting, group decisions, and sharing the celebrations of the families in your room. [Browse community resources here](/s?keywords=community&pub_yearLevels=has_any%3AearlyChildhood).
