## Which Syllabus Applies in 2026?

There are two NSW Science and Technology K-6 syllabuses in play right now, and it matters when you buy a unit.

- **Science and Technology K-6 Syllabus (2017)** is the syllabus most schools are still teaching in 2026. It is organised around the Living World, Material World, Physical World, Earth and Space and Digital Technologies. NESA says it remains available until December 2028.
- **Science and Technology K-6 Syllabus (2024)** is the new syllabus. NESA has set 2026 as the year to plan and prepare, with teaching starting in 2027. Schools may choose to start teaching it during the planning and preparation phase, so some are already using it this year.

The 2024 syllabus is built around focus areas rather than the old content strands. Each stage has one Science focus area and one Technologies focus area. For example, in Stage 2 they are "Physical and living systems depend on energy" and "Design processes and digital systems are used to create solutions". You can read them on the [NSW Curriculum website](https://curriculum.nsw.edu.au/learning-areas/science/science-and-technology-k-6-2024/overview), and the 2017 syllabus is still on the [NESA site](https://www.nsw.gov.au/education-and-training/nesa/curriculum/science/science-and-technology-k-6-2017).

The NSW Department of Education has published a sample scope and sequence and sample units for the 2024 syllabus. Early Stage 1 has four units, one per term. Stages 1, 2 and 3 each have eight units organised across the eight terms of the stage (see the department's [planning, programming and assessing page](https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/curriculum/science/planning-programming-and-assessing-science-k-6)). That is why so many units on TeachBuySell carry a number, like "Stage 2 Unit 4". The number tells you which sample unit it lines up with, and sellers often split the eight units into Year A and Year B.

**Buying tip:** if your school is still on the 2017 syllabus in 2026, check the listing description for the outcomes it covers. If you are preparing for 2027, look for "2024 syllabus" or a unit number in the title.

## Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) Science and Technology

The Early Stage 1 focus areas in the 2024 syllabus are "Observations and questions spark curiosity" and "Observations and questions initiate design and digital solutions". Content covers living things and their characteristics, the observable properties of materials, and how living things and objects move. The department's four sample units, one per term, cover senses and living things, materials, animal structures and food and fibre, then movement.

For Kindergarten, look for a unit that is more hands-on than the later stages: picture-based slides, sorting and cut-and-paste worksheets, simple observation records, and a small design-and-make task rather than a written assessment.

There are fewer complete Kindergarten units on TeachBuySell than for Stages 1 to 3, so these two topic guides go deeper:

- [Early Stage 1 Science: Living Things](/teacher-guides/early-stage-1-science-living-things) for the Term 1 unit on plants, animals and their needs
- [Early Stage 1 Science: Materials](/teacher-guides/early-stage-1-science-materials) for properties of materials and simple design tasks

You can also [browse Foundation science resources](/s?keywords=science&pub_yearLevels=has_any%3Afoundation) for experiments and activities to build a unit around.

## Stage 1 (Years 1-2) Science and Technology Units

Stage 1 has the widest range of complete units on TeachBuySell. The 2024 focus areas are "Investigations of changes provide knowledge and understanding" and "Design and digital solutions are created through knowledge and understanding". The Science content covers living things changing over time, how light and sound interact with materials, the sense organs, forces and movement, planet Earth, and the sky.

The department's Stage 1 sample units include a design unit on materials and products (Unit 2), Earth's systems, weather and seasons (Unit 3), the brain and senses (Unit 4), sound (Unit 5) and light (Unit 6). Units on TeachBuySell cover most of these, including:

- **Designing Solutions: Materials, Products and User Needs** (Unit 2), one of our most popular Science units, with 16 lessons, slides for every lesson, a hands-on design project, worksheets and assessment tools
- **Sense Lab** (Unit 4), a 16-lesson unit on the brain, the senses and digital systems
- Year 1 units on weather and seasons, living things, and materials, and Year 2 units on light and sound, forces, and Earth's resources
- A Year 1 teaching slides bundle covering Terms 1 to 3

For a closer look at how the Stage 1 design unit runs, see our [NSW Science design process guide](/teacher-guides/nsw-science-design-process-stage-1-3).

## Stage 2 (Years 3-4) Science and Technology Units

Stage 2 content in the 2024 syllabus is organised around energy: living things depending on energy and materials, changes to the properties of matter, body systems that enable movement, heat transfer, forces shaping Earth's surface, and the Sun as the centre of the solar system. The Technologies focus area is "Design processes and digital systems are used to create solutions".

The Stage 2 units teachers buy most often line up with the department's sample units:

- **Unit 1: Earth's Systems and Living Things** (Lessons 1 to 10), covering ecosystems, energy and fair tests on plant growth
- **Unit 2: From Problem to Solution, The Design Process**, a nature-inspired design unit with 350+ slides, a student design journal and a rubric
- **Unit 3: Shaping Earth**, covering landforms, weathering, erosion, earthquakes and volcanoes
- **Unit 4: Built to Move**, an 8-week unit on vertebrates, invertebrates, bones, muscles and joints, with 16 lesson PowerPoints

If you run Stage 2 as a composite class, check whether a unit is labelled Year A or Year B so you do not repeat content in the second year.

## Stage 3 (Years 5-6) Science and Technology Units

Stage 3 brings the two 2024 focus areas together around sustainability: "Knowledge of our world and beyond inspires sustainable solutions" and "Design and digital technologies engineer sustainable solutions". Content includes adaptation over millions of years, matter and resources, body systems that coordinate for survival, electrical energy, Earth's climate, and our solar system within the wider Universe.

Stage 3 units tend to be large packs, because the lessons carry more explicit teaching, data work and coding. Popular units include:

- **Unit 1: Weather, Climate and Human Impact** (Lessons 1 to 5 so far)
- **Unit 2: Body Systems in Action**, a 361-slide pack covering 16 lessons with worksheets, aligned to the department's sample Unit 2
- **Unit 3: Electrical Circuits, Coding and Sustainable Design**, 16 lessons running from circuits and conductors to coding a conductivity tester and a final design project
- **Unit 4: Renewable Energy and Sustainable Solutions**, 16 lessons with slides, worksheets, answer pages and a scope and sequence

These units carry a lot of slides. Preview the first few lessons before you buy to check that the pace and reading level suit your class.

## What a Complete Unit Should Include

Before you buy, check the listing description and preview for these:

- **A unit overview or scope and sequence** that names the syllabus (2017 or 2024) and the outcomes covered
- **A full term of lessons.** Most complete units on TeachBuySell run 16 lessons, roughly two a week over an eight-week block
- **Slides for every lesson**, with learning intentions and success criteria
- **Student worksheets** for each lesson, with answer pages where there are right answers
- **At least one hands-on investigation** or fair test, plus a design-and-make task for the Technologies outcomes
- **An assessment task** with a rubric or checklist you can use for reporting

Some sellers sell a unit in two halves (Lessons 1 to 8 and 9 to 16) as well as the full pack. The full pack is usually better value if you plan to teach the whole unit.

If you want a quick experiment to slot into a unit rather than a whole pack, our [science activities guide](/teacher-guides/science-activities) has hands-on ideas across the strands, and our [National Science Week guide](/teacher-guides/national-science-week-classroom) has activities for August.
