## How Tasmanian Teachers Move Up the Pay Scale

- **Starting level:** the Department says the usual starting salary outside an isolated school is **Band 1, Level 5** ($85,313). Its salary scales start four-year trained teachers from Level 4 ($81,762) and five-year trained teachers from Level 5. Beginning teachers at an isolated school start at **Level 8** ($99,010).
- **Each year** teachers move up one level. Leave without pay or breaks of more than three months do not count.
- **Level 13** needs 12 months at Level 12 and full registration with the Teachers Registration Board.
- **Qualifications** change which levels you move through. For example, five-year trained teachers skip some levels on the way to Level 13.
- **Beginning teachers** in their first two years get time release from teaching under the BeTTR program.

## Advanced Skills Teacher and Principal Pay

Principal pay depends on the school's level (1 to 6) and the principal's progression point within it.

## Tasmanian Relief Teacher Pay

Relief teachers in Tasmanian government schools are appointed day to day for short, irregular absences of up to 20 continuous days. They are paid on the same Band 1 levels, at an hourly rate slightly above the permanent rate. For a four-year trained relief teacher at Level 5 this is about **$46.88 an hour** in 2026.

The Department publishes relief rates by the hour, not the day. See the [DECYP salary scales](https://publicdocumentcentre.education.tas.gov.au/library/Shared%20Documents/Salary-Scales.pdf) for every level.
