This set of reading passages with comprehension questions is designed to support year 1 readers and build their understanding of text. These activities target both fluency and comprehension.

Comprehension

Each decodable story has two multiple-choice questions and one short response. The multiple-choice comprehension questions have two possible answer choices with large “bubble” circles for students to color to indicate their answer.

Fluency

These worksheets encourage repeated reading which helps build fluency. Students are prompted to read the passage 3 times, colouring a smiley face each time, before answering the questions.

These reading comprehension passages can be used for homework, assessment, or guided practice during your reading groups. They are also great for remediation and intervention with year 2 students who need extra help.
