Provide students with an 'I need' chart and a counter, small object or sticky note for them to place over what they need when they are struggling or need to communicate with you without the rest of the class knowing. These charts could also be used to introduce regulation strategies with your students, or to discuss how each of us needs different things in order to remain calm or learn effectively.
