Phonemic awareness is easier with PICTURES for LETTER TILES because of the multi-sensory way it is used. The learner hears the word, their eyes see the dots (phonemes), then their fingers find the letter tiles that correspond with that sound. The picture reminds them of the word and the number of boxes is the clue for the number of letters they need. They do not have to think about writing or how to form the letters. The focus remains on phonemics and more time is spent segmenting, matching and blending sounds. Phonemic Development is thought to be the single most influential component of successful reading. Certainly, from my experience in working with struggling readers, the lack of phonic, phonological or phonemic skills can be a significant obstacle to progress.

This is the third level of phonemic awareness and it introduces terminal consonant blends, building on the skills mastered in CVC and CCVC words. Again, some of the words have three phonemes – cash, (represented by black dots), but most have a consonant digraph of blended sounds with four phonemes in total - cost. The single sound/consonant digraphs chsh, and th should be taught before this step and mastered with CCVC words. The 'nk' terminal blend may need specific coaching due to the blend of 'ng' and 'k' sounds.

This level assumes your learner/s can segment and blend CVC and CCVC words and are ready to master terminal blends including single phoneme/consonant digraphs. If you start with CVC words means you will identify and eliminate auditory issues early and there is understanding of the sound/symbol relationship at phoneme level. The CCVC level exposes blending issues.
