Body clues lesson for emotional awareness & regulation | Interoception PowerPoint + Activities

What is it?

This explicit SEL lesson teaches students about interoception: the ability to recognise and understand the signals inside our body (e.g., a racing heart when we're scared). In simple terms - BODY CLUES! Understanding body clues and linking them to emotions is important for young children because it allows them to better recognise and manage their emotions.

What's included?

Explicit teaching slides (32 pages) including:

  • Learning Intention
  • Success Criteria
  • Vocabulary
  • I do (goes through the importance of body clues and examples of body clues for 8 emotions)
  • We do (discuss body clues we each feel for different emotions)
  • You do (worksheets, check-ins, or reusable activity)
  • Reflect on Success Criteria

Worksheets with:

  • 8 different emotions (students cut & paste relevant body clues onto the body)
  • 1 blank template (students select an emotion and draw their own body clues)

Check-ins:

  • 3 versions of check-ins to use daily, after an incident, or anytime a student needs to check-in with their own body and emotions.

Reusable activity:

  • A blank and reusable version of the worksheets. Laminate and use velcro dots to allow students to place body clues onto the body template.

How to use it:

Simply download, print, and go!

  • Use the PowerPoint to guide students though the lesson steps.
  • Laminate the reusable activity and use velcro dots for multiple uses.

The best part:

The body clue pictures are open-ended enough that students can use them to explain many body sensations.
