This is a great way to help students learn to add 9 by adding 10 first, then taking 1.

I developed this package for my students who found adding 9 difficult. Once they get the hang of adding 10, adding 9 is the next step. I teach them to 'add 10 and take 1'.

Games are the best way to teach strategies because you need the repetition for the strategy to become automatic and games provide the motivation to play over and over. You can't go wrong.

I use these games for Intervention now but you could also use them for a whole class. That's why I've developed 10 boards - with groups of 3 you can cater for 30 students. Just give them 3 counters each to cover their numbers. You can also add them to a Maths Centre when the focus is on something else and your students can play the game independently for consolidation.
