Description
Flip Books are a critical element of intervention when foundation phonics have not been mastered easily. There is value in using hands, eyes and ears when sequencing the letter combinations, especially the pattern CVVC which comprises long vowel sounds.
Reading alone will not provide the time and practice that some students will need, but five to ten minutes before reading will do the trick. Supplement that with targeted games and you have a beginning reader who demonstrates progress and is full of confidence.
Reading pseudo words targets blending and sequencing. I usually ask, "Is that a real word?" The student usually knows it isn't but I like to ensure they understand the difference. They are producing the sounds they relate to the vowel combination and sequencing the sounds. They are not relying on their sight word vocabulary when they decode a pseudo word.
This Flip Book comes with three Word Banks, one arranged by onsets; the others by rime and vowel digraphs. There is also a suggested process for targeted intervention with graduated skill sequences you can use if you wish. I have included photos of how I assemble my Flip Books as well.
