Description

Matilda, by Roald Dahl, is a great read for Years 5 and 6. This game will extend vocabulary and develop skills in decoding. It will contribute to fluency levels for all abilities and the benefits will then flow to comprehension.

This game scaffolds the reading component with the focus on three-syllable words, and there's lots of them in Matilda. The games are organised by chapter with twelve words targeted in each game. The game is so much fun it motivates even the most reluctant reader, perfect for inclusivity. You need a spoon (or similar object) for each game. Up to six players can play with 36 cards per game and a Word List for players to consult.

Players exercise construction strategies as they examine each syllable on cards in their hands, and deconstruction skills as they consult the Word List to see if they have any matches. This is one of my preferred games when I have a student exhibiting dyslexic characteristics. It is also ideal for students who balk at longer words, often guessing based on the first letter or syllable. You will build confidence in these students as their decoding strategies improve.

This is the black and white version of the game with just one game per chapter. A coloured version is also available.
