A NONSENSE WORD GAME- THE 'READ AND BUILD' TOWER GAME.
Overview
Description
Using nonsense words in the classroom is an effective way for students to learn to apply spelling rules to words as they cannot rely on their prior knowledge or memory of how the word is spelled, as the word is not real.
This fun, hands on, block building game is a perfect way for students to work on blending, decoding and applying learnt spelling rules/ patterns in a multisensory way.
To play, print the cards onto the specified coloured card. See the colour code key to assist with this. Laminate and cut the cards up. Either place the cards with a bulldog clip on them, in a small storage container or zip lock bag.
Before playing, you need to know how the game works. You must explain that the game is a nonsense word game and explicitly state that the words are not real- that they are made up.
On each card you will see a word and a number! The number indicates how many blocks you get to add to your tower after you read the word. There are 4 different ways to play this game.
There are 7 leveled decks of cards included in this resource (with 45 nonsense words in each deck- 9 words included with each short vowel sound). This game was designed to assist your students with decoding, blending, fluency and automaticity.
Print them onto coloured card- the resource tells you what colour to print each level onto to make it easy for you!
The 7 leveled decks focus on:
- CVC
- CCVC
- CVCC
- CCVCC
- Digraphs
- Mix + ss, ff, ll, zz, ck.
- Multisyllable words
