Description

As Early Years teachers we cannot assume that students will come to school knowing what letters are, be able to recite the alphabet and understand the alphabet code. It is our job to take things back to basics and ensure we explicitly teach the alphabet, as research indicates that letter name instruction strengthens letter sound knowledge.

My ‘Alphabet Sequence’ Review pack includes 7 activities that will help your students revise and understand the alphabet. It includes flashcards, what comes next in the sequence, before and after, and finding the missing letter activities- just to name a few. This pack will allow your students to work on letter naming fluency as well as demonstrate their understanding of the alphabet.

Knowing and understanding letter names supports students:

- To learn to write their name as names often don’t follow the rules using the simple phonics code taught to young children, even using a systematic SoR approach.

- To encode or decode irregular words as you can point out the tricky parts by focusing on the part of the word that does not follow the normal spelling rule. For example in the word said, the letter a and i together represent the short /e/ sound.

- To understand alternative spelling choices. Early on in Prep this would be when you are teaching that the letter c, letter k and letters c and k together can represent the /k/. As you and your students delve into unlocking the code further, letter names will allow you to discuss alternative spellings and help your students understand that there are often several ways to represent one sound using different letter combinations such as vowel teams.

- With their formation of letters. Using letter names rather than sounds assists students with their handwriting development as if you asked them to write a sound, there are simply too many alternatives and it is not explicit enough.

This review pack is FREE. It comes in 6 Australian state fonts and includes both lowercase and uppercase letters throughout the pack. A contents page that contains hyperlinks will allow you to save time scrolling through the PowerPoint looking for the activity that you are searching for.

he PowerPoint was primarily designed to be used with Prep/ Kindy/ Reception/ Foundation students in Term 1 and 2 of commencing school. It is a review, meaning that this learning should have already been explicitly taught by the classroom teacher, and this would complement existing knowledge. It could also be used in Year/ Grade 1 as it really goes back over the foundation early literacy skills, particularly with those learners that need regular repetition and exposures before mastering a skill.

This PowerPoint comes in all Australian state fonts. When you download this zipped folder, simply unzip it by right clicking and compressing and select the Australian font you wish to use.

The PowerPoint can be used in a variety of ways. It was made to use as a whole class review but it would also be beneficial to use in small group or one on one intervention or tutoring groups.

Most of the slides are animated and require a click of the mouse. It is always recommended that teachers go over this PowerPoint before using it with their students so that they know exactly how the slides work, making the review lesson as effective and beneficial as it possibly can be.

There are 7 activities included in this PowerPoint that range in difficulty. The contents page has hyperlinks taking you straight to the slides you wish to review. This PowerPoint has NOT been designed for your students to sit in front of for a long period of time but rather a short burst of time where you really focus on an area that you feel that they need to review and consolidate.
