Description

Add fun to learning the CCVCC letter pattern with this game. Altogether there are 30 boards and 75 illustrated cards. The cards can also be used for intervention if you have students who need an extra level of support. Combine the sets to cater for more players. The ten boards in each set have the same 25 words, but they are in different places. My boards are laminated and players use wipe-off markers that they clean off themselves. This game is a productive way to fill five minutes or twenty.

WORDS USED:

Set 1: blank, stand, shell, plant, clamp, check, stiff, crash, swell, blend, trunk, crisp, skunk, flick, stunt, grill, frill, chomp, stump, grand, scalp, flock, shock, stuck, swing

Set 2: bring, chest, spill, press, clump, chick, stack, grump, spell, trick, trust, stamp, dress, swept, brand, print, frost, fresh, slant, skill, stuff, shift, think, twist, blush

Set 3: brush, clock, spend, plank, chimp, thick, stick, drift, slept, thank, truck, stink, drank, crush, crust, sling, speck, drill, sting, cling, cliff, sniff, smock, cross, flush

The illustrated word cards are designed to provide extra support for those students who need it, especially for second language learning or vocabulary development. You could start with a small group just reading the words under the picture clue. The target skill is blending and it is assumed players have common consonant sounds and the short vowels. When the sounds are known and fluency is the issue I use time as the motivator. I find my students are keen to improve on their own fluency rate.

The first stage of the game is covering (or crossing out) three adjoining words in a row. The next stage is covering four words in a row, but all must be joined, and if you have time you can go for five in a row - the whole row covered or marked off. I expect students to wipe their own boards clean. You can use the flash cards for direct teaching or substitute for the picture cards if your students are at this level.
