This Chemical Science Investigation Pack for Kitchen Science is a detailed Science Inquiry. There are explicit notes for each section and activity sheets to choose from to record learning.

Engage – Define Chemical Science

  • Complete a KWHL to record what they know, and what they would like to know – glue in STEAM Book. There is a page per heading and the W is for their Wonderings. This is to be added to as they progress through the unit.
  • There is a cover for your unit if you choose to use it. Students can colour and use a heading page in their notebooks.
  • Share the rubric for learning and glue into your journal
  • STEAM Book for revisiting throughout the unit.
  • Define chemical science and how it affects food.
  • Share the photos of food and have students attempt to describe the change that would happen from start to finish.
  • Complete the Word Wall. Add words and phrases to use in writing and increase vocabulary for speaking and listening experiences.
  • Complete individual A-Z Key glue into STEAM Book.
  • Options – I see, I think, I wonder
  • Create spelling word lists related to the theme and glue into the Word Study Book.
  • Use technology to research chemical science in Reading Group time – share/show how to research, using keyword search ie kitchen science facts for kids.


Explain – Chemical Science Surprises

We will be making

  • popcorn and looking at why a corn kernel changes from being hard to a soft and becomes a fluffy ingredient.
  • fizzy sherbet and explaining what happens when it touches our tongue and why it causes a reaction.
  • We will be exploring what happens when we heat or mix ingredients together and why there is a reaction.


Explain – why does it work?

  • Whole class discussion about the ideas/issues/concerns/knowledge generated from the Engage section.
  • Revisit their Wonderings from the KWHL and check in if there have been some answers.
  • Share the ”What is a chemical change?’ Then make your own poster.
  • Share ”Chemical change is about mixtures’ and discuss the type of mixtures we have in each of these spaces.
  • Complete the two printables – “What mixtures do we find in these areas?‘ and “What type of mixtures fit these categories?’


Elaborate – Chemical Science Detectives

Through the following recipes explore the science behind the changes

  • Butter
  • Cupcakes
  • Pizza dough
  • Ice cream
  • Jelly
  • Playdough
  • Slime
