This freebie targets vocabulary development in Chapter 1 of Grandpa's Great Escape by David Walliams. It is a Worksheet/Game because it will extend vocabulary based on each chapter of the book, but it has high engagement value as a game.

The game needs two players, a six-sided die and two pencils or small objects to claim spaces. The object of the game is to read the words and claim four adjacent vertical spaces (a stack) to win. The fun begins as players block each other or have to miss a turn. The game is never the same twice due to the throw of the die.

This book is exceptionally good for vocabulary development and the antics of Jack and his Grandpa will keep your students interested. The references to England, World War II and dementia will need explanation and this could be done explicitly as dementia could be a sensitive subject for some students although it is treated with dignity in the book. The character development of Jack is work exploring as he begins to accept his grandfather's condition and is reconciled to his death in the final chapters.
