Description

This PowerPoint resource is a Writing Revolution aligned introduction to note-taking, designed as a strong first step for explicitly teaching how to take notes in the primary years (Years 1–6). It is ideal for classrooms and schools introducing note taking for the very first time.

This resource explicitly breaks down what note taking is, why we do it, and how to do it, using simple symbols and clear routines that reduce cognitive load and support all learners. Lessons follow a clear I Do, We Do, You Do structure so students are supported at every stage.

The resource includes 5 complete sessions (a full week of lessons) with a total of 140 explicit, interactive PowerPoint slides, making it a comprehensive and ready to use unit.

What’s Included

Session 1: Introduction to Note Taking

Students are introduced to what note taking is, why we take notes, and how note taking helps learning. Key vocabulary and symbols are explicitly taught to build understanding before students begin writing notes.

Session 2: Converting Sentences into Notes

Students begin learning how to turn simple sentences into notes using symbols. Lessons follow the same clear structure as Session 1, with gradual increases in difficulty.

Session 3: Practicing Converting Sentences into Notes

Students continue practicing turning sentences into notes with increased independence, while still supported through explicit teaching and guided practice.

Session 4: Converting Notes into Sentences

Students learn how to use notes to write full sentences. This session explicitly teaches that notes are a tool for writing, not the final product.

Session 5: Applying Note Taking Skills

Students continue to practice converting notes into sentences consolidating their understanding of the full note taking process.
