Description
If you teach Prep/ Foundation/ Kindy/ Reception/ Pre Primary/ Year (Grade) 1, or Year (Grade) 2) then this game will be a fantastic addition to your bank of educational games for your classroom. This board game focused on developing key phonemic/ phonological awareness skills. These skills are important to master in the first few years of schooling. My 'Phonemic Awareness Dash game, will allow your students to work on 7 key areas of Phonemic Awareness, in an engaging and stimulating way. The 7 areas include:
- Identifying the beginning sound.
- Identifying the final sound.
- Identifying the medial sound.
- Clapping and identifying syllables.
- Creating rhyming words.
- Segmenting words into individual phonemes.
- Word manipulation- Changing the beginning, middle and final sound in a word.
There are 11 differentiated game boards to select from, enabling you to select the skills that are appropriate for your students. Whether they are playing as part of a guided reading session, with an aide, a parent helper or in a small group, this game can be played independently (once shown explicitly the first few times), as it relies on picture cards- with only text for the rhyming cards). To play, simply pick a relevant game board that is appropriate for your students, roll a dice, move that many places and draw a card that is the same colour as what you land on. Answer the question and give yourself a point every lap you make around the board! It is that easy!
To play:
Place the cards picture side facing down on top of the matching colour dot pile in the centre of the game board. Players can place their coloured counter anywhere to begin. Roll a dice and move that many places. Whichever colour you land on, turn over a matching coloured playing card and answer the question. eg. If you land on yellow- you pick a yellow card from the pile, turn it over and identify the final sound in the word. Each time you make your way around the gameboard you could give yourself a point on the scoring sheet- this is optional. A score is rewarded for each lap around the gameboard. For points I give out stone diamonds that I got from Bunnings (they are clear plastic diamonds) from the outside section near the stones if you are interested.
There are very clear instructions provided regarding printing to ensure this game is prepared properly. You must read the instructions carefully and ensure you print double sided. Before printing all of the slides, I highly suggest you print 2 pages back to back to ensure your printer is set up properly. Printing double sided so the dot is facing up and the picture below, makes the game much easier for your students to match the colour they land on to the coloured card they need.
Please note, this game requires colour printing. This is for a number of reasons.
1. Students can see the image more clearly.
2. It is colour coded so students can play the game with less confusion.
3. Makes pack up time and sorting cards easier at the end of the game.
There are 90 picture cards for each of the 7 categories making 630 picture cards included in this game pack- (there are a few extra cards in the word manipulation flashcard deck). The picture cards can be used during other literacy activities such as making words with magnetic letters, recording the sounds they hear, segmenting orally and then recording the word in sand or on mini whiteboards, sorting picture cards into syllables just to name a few.
Please read all of the instructions carefully to ensure you set this activity up properly to get the most out of it. It can be used during small groups, literacy groups, intervention, one on one settings and even with an aide or parent helper (once you train them up on how to play).
