This resource can be used time and time again!

The phonemic awareness: real and nonsense words phonic slider was created to be used in an early years classroom to practice phonemic awareness, in particular substituting phonemes in a word with other phonemes.

Included in this resource are:

•20 2-syllable, 20 3-syllable and 20 4-syllable words (including a variety of cvc, ccvc and cvcc words, di-graphs and tri-graphs) all segmented by the graphemes in the word.

•4 vowel sound slider inserts

•4 consonant sound slider inserts

•Real words list template

This resource is designed to substitute sounds by sliding between different phonemes to change the word, with students then reading the new word and recognising whether it is a real or nonsense word. However, the more I played with the resource the more versatile it appeared to be. Some of the other ideas for the use of this resource are:

•Only write down the real words that are discovered. This way the students are still practicing reading each new word and substituting phonemes but are spending less time writing every new word made.

•Slice up the sliders into individual sound cards and add Velcro dots to the cards as well as to the word cards. This allows for more sound substitutions per word. It also allows for a greater level of differentiation choosing how many or how little sounds are put out to substitute with (i.e. only putting out short vowel sounds to substitute with.)
