This game targets the reading and spelling of words with the silent consonants B C H and T.

Phonics is the critical element of early reading progress but the introduction of words that cannot be decoded easily is a parallel skill. Silent letters fall into this category. Words with silent letters need to be part of a student's long term memory and the only way they get there is through exposure. Some students need more time than others to commit these words to their long term memory and to be able to retrieve them fluently. This is where games come in. The high engagement that games provide means all students will gain in fluency rates.

I call this game a worksheet game because it can be handed out like a worksheet or laminated for repeated play. It is a two-player game and all you need to start is a six-sided die and pencils. If you have enough dice, it can be played with a whole class. It can be played over and over because the throw of the die means the game is never the same.

The Flash Cards are included because that's what I use for students who need an extra level of support. I use them to teach whatever is necessary; decoding, syllabication, meaning, and (in this case) identifying the silent letter.
