Description
Storm Boy, by Colin Thiele, is a great choice for a literature unit, but even if you are reading it simply for enjoyment it lends itself to vocabulary extension with the wealth of language it presents.
This game grew out of my efforts to cater for my students who were intimidated by longer words. They needed a game that was highly engaging to overcome their lack of confidence and break the guessing habit. Spoons is an old game and it is easily adapted to skill development. You need up to six players. The object of the game is to make a three-syllable word out of the five cards each player is dealt. The skills involved maybe deconstruction and matching using the Word List (provided with each set), or construction using the cards in their hand. Phonemic skills are involved with blending and sequencing being required. Players are not aware of this as they try to outwit their opponent/s and try to win.
The cards are in black and white. You can mix the sets or delete words as required. Adjust the number of players if the sets are smaller.
SET A: Adelaide, bandicoots, beachcomber, collection, freshwater, kerosene, packages, postmaster, remember, terribly, tussocky, wandering
SET B: blunderbuss, carefully, crisscrossing, cuttlefish, excitement, fishermen, furious, gunpowder, seahorses, sedately, thistledown, underside
SET C: destruction, dignified, disapprove, heavily, ibises, important, innocent, pelican, politely, secretly, serious, wickerwork
SET D: appetite, collected, favourite, joyously, miracle, overhead, Percival, reunion, serenely, spectacles, suddenly, unhappy
SET E: breathlessly, disappoint, embankments, expected, gentleman, horrified, inspectors, patiently, postmaster, sullenly, understand, usual
SET F: beginning, countryside, decided, embarrassed, excited, exhausted, museum, preparing, shivering, unfastened, wonderful
SET G: aeroplane, awkwardly, confounded, cumbersome, echoing, gunpowder, helplessly, impatient, moistening, ponderous, terrible, understood
SET H: cumbersome, disappeared, examined, happiness, holidays, motionless, museum, Percival, quietly, silently, suddenly, together
