Overview
Description
Are you looking to promote safe choices by students in your classroom? Would you like to support your students in growing their capacity for self-regulating their behaviour? Student First Next Then Calm Down Coping Self Regulation Strategy Posters have been created to assist your students in using your Calm Down Space productively. My experience in teaching both mainstream and special education classes has proven that students need more than just identifying their feelings. Students then need to be supported to learn how to safely self-regulate their behaviours.

How do my students use this resource?
Resource prep involves you printing the feeling cards and strategy cards onto cardstock (or laminating), cutting out and collating. Then print out copies of whichever First Next Then poster you prefer for your Calm Down Area. On the back of each card I prefer to place a velcro dot. I also use Velcro dots on the posters making it easy for your students to display the safe strategy they have selected. Your student will choose up to 3 strategies to use independently to regulate their behaviour. A range of sensory. focused attention and movement strategies have been included. It allows you at quick glance to see that your student is engaged with using the Calm Down space productively and reflectively.
The aim of these choice boards is for students to select three choices because for many students they may need to use more than one strategy in an attempt to regulate their own behaviour eg a combination of an active physical strategy, followed by a breathe focused strategy.
This resource was created with the promotion of student choice for self-regulation. However if your students do not currently have capacity to choose their own strategies you may wish to use the cards and the posters as a visual to show students how you would like them to use the space by choosing for them.
Thank you for considering this resource for your classroom.
