Description

This resource assists with children counting with one to one correspondence, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. This is a non-editable PDF that will require printing and laminating.

☀ One to one correspondence is the ability to match an object to the corresponding number and recognise that numbers are symbols to represent a quantity. Young children often learn to count without having an understanding of one to one correspondence (Kearns, 2010).

So…

Even though the child may be able to count to 10, or 20 and beyond, he or she needs to understand to count objects only once.

★ The child may count 5 objects and get a total of 6 because he/she has counted one of the objects twice.

★ The child may count 5 objects and get a total of 4 because he/she has missed counting one of the objects.

★ Make sure the child touches the pointing hand only once as he/she counts and does not skip any.

Instructions:

✷ Print out the pages.

✷ Laminate

✷ Cut into the 9 strips.

✷ Hole punch the ends and join with a ring/string, etc.

✷ Children count the objects by placing their finger over each of the pointing hands.

Connect number names, numerals and quantities, including zero, initially up to 10 and then beyond ACMNA002 - understanding that each object must be counted only once, that the arrangement of objects does not affect how many there are, and that the last number counted answers the ‘how many’ question.
