Overview

Description

You can use SORT IT cards in so many ways to target a range of skills and cater for a wide range of student ability. This is the most flexible product you can add to your teaching repertoire when teaching reading at the CVC level. With the ten MEMORY games I have included you will be able to cater for intervention, consolidation and/or review until these foundation skills are mastered.

The words I have used are:

Short a: hat, pan, tab, tap, pad, mat, sad, rat, ham

Short e: bed, red, leg, gem, den, wet, web, pen, wed

Short i: bib, kid, lid, dig, fig, pig, wig, bin, pin

Short o: fog, fox, jog, dog, mop, log, box, pop, hop

Short u: bun, hug, rug, sun, nut, tub, bug, sub, bus

SORT IT activities came about when I had many students still developing the ability to discriminate between the sounds of letters in a word. I came up with the four formats because the picture+word card laid the foundation for meaning and vocabulary development. Then I could introduce the picture and word only cards. Finally, phonemic segmentation and discrimination could be addressed and it could be done with the missing vowel cards, sorting pockets or writing from the missing vowel or picture only cards. I don't think I have used them exactly the same way twice. No doubt you will be able to use them in a unique way to suit the needs of individuals and groups in your class.

I have added vowel posters as well as ten MEMORY games to provide variety. They are differentiated as the range of consonants are introduced:
