In this activity, children build and check CVC words. This hands on literacy small group task helps children to demonstrate their knowledge of phonemic awareness as they segment words and make a spelling choice. This resource includes 40 word cards, with 8 cards for each medial vowel sound. Begin with cards clipped closed (using a clothes peg or paperclip) and the picture displayed. Children build the word using magnetic letters, letter beads, stamps, markers on whiteboards etc. A construction mat is provided as an option for this to provide a defined workspace for those students who need one. The card is unclipped for children to check their answer by comparing the written word to the letters they have chosen.
