Description

In this activity, children build and check words with digraphs. This hands on literacy small group task helps children to demonstrate their phonemic awareness as they segment words and make a spelling choice.

This resource includes 48 word cards, with 9 beginning and ending digraphs (listed below). Begin with cards clipped closed (using a clothes peg or paperclip) and the picture displayed. Children build the word using magnetic letters, letter beads, stamps, markers on whiteboards etc. A construction mat is provided as an option for this to provide a defined workspace for those students who need one. The card is unclipped for children to check their answer by comparing the written word to the letters they have chosen.

Easily differentiate this task by choosing the words you wish your children to construct. Choose also whether they build the entire word, or just the digraph they identify. The digraph is highlighted in bold on each card for this purpose. This activity can be made even more engaging for little learners with the addition of construction hard hats or tool belts from your dress up box! Place your magnetic letters in a toy tool box for extra fun.
