These are the words that students need to know by sight. Their phonic knowledge is the basis of decoding, but silent letters are different and phonic rules only help so far. They need to see these words over and over so the letter patterns become familiar and the best way to do this for all ability levels is through games. It's the repetition in playing that leads to increases in fluency for all.

I call this a worksheet/game because you can hand it out as a worksheet, but the game element is the part that is lots of fun. Students play in pairs and they need a pencil and a six-sided die. The game is never the same because the throw of the die. If you have enough dice you could play with a whole class, but it would suit groups and independent play as well.

The Flash Cards I have included are useful for those students who need pre-teaching. I use them all the time to ensure students can identify the silent letter and syllabicate if they are still learning to do this. If the word isn't in their oral vocabulary, they will need an explanation.
