Syllable Sort - Feed the Monsters
Overview
Description
In this activity, children sort words based on the number of syllables. This phonemic awareness task provides practice in segmenting words in to 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 syllables.
To prepare this resource, simply print the word cards and monsters. Cut out the monster mouths and attach to small containers - or use the cards in your pocket chart! Children choose a card, say the word and count the syllables. They place the card into the correct monster's mouth. As an extension, children could create their own word cards to sort into the monster mouths.
A simple cut'n'paste worksheet has been included as a follow up or 'Fast Finisher' option.
Words included:
1 syllable – cook, mask, keys, park, soap, cat, ball, shoes
2 syllables – flower, donut, sunrise, rainbow, turtle, taco, balloon, breakfast
3 syllables – battery, dragonfly, flamingo, hospital, pineapple, dinosaur, octopus, microphone
4 syllables – delivery, calculator, macaroni, invitation, alligator, avocado, vegetables, escalator
5 syllables – multiplication, hippopotamus, alphabetical, electricity, laboratory, refrigerator, auditorium, cafeteria
