When 'ie' says long 'e' (field/belief/tier, etc.) - STACK 4 GAME for decoding/fluency - 50 Words
Overview
Description
Sometimes 'ie' is pronounced with the long 'e' sound and this can be confusing when it is first introduced. The best way students master this pattern is with reading, but when reading levels aren't enough, try games. High motivation games will provide the repetition that leads to fluency and individual fluency rates will improve no matter the ability level.
You need two players, a six-sided die and a pencil each if you are using it like a worksheet. It can be played with a whole class if you have enough dice. Alternatively, laminate and use with wipe-off crayons. The game will never be the same twice as the throw of the die will be unpredictable.
These are the fifty words I have included:
field, shield, priest, smoothie, chief, thief, achieve, believe, belief, tier, niece, shriek, beanie, piece, married, brief, grief, siege, fierce, airfield, pierce, diesel, hygiene, retrieve, grieve, carried, cookie, calorie, species, collie, relief, budgie, selfie, hurries, genie, thieves, tier, windshield, pier, studied, meanie, cashier, sieve, movie, series, goalie, zombie, hoodie, frontier, relieve
The Flash Cards are included for pre-teaching if needed.
