The fast, free way to create a classroom word search
Need a word search for tomorrow's lesson? This free word search creator makes a print-ready puzzle in under a minute — with a custom word list, an Australian-curriculum theme, an optional AI word search generator that drafts a themed list from any topic, difficulty settings for Foundation through Year 6, and a printable PDF with answer key. It works equally well as a classroom find-a-word (or wordfind) template, a home-school activity, or a relief-teacher back-pocket task.
How the word search generator works
- Choose your settings. Grid from 8×8 (quick) to 20×20 (challenging). Difficulty: Basic (horizontal only — Foundation/Y1), Standard (horizontal and vertical, forward and backward), or Advanced (all eight directions — Y4+). Pick a year level to tune vocabulary complexity.
- Add your words. Type a custom list, choose from built-in themes (Australian Animals, Sight Words, Indigenous Terms, Maths, Space, Ocean Life, and more), or use the AI generator — enter a topic like "water cycle vocabulary" and get a themed list matched to the year level you chose.
- Preview and export. Check the puzzle interactively, then download a printable PDF — with or without an answer sheet, ready to photocopy.
Word search ideas by year level
Foundation & Year 1
Short familiar words on a small grid (8×8 or 10×10), Basic difficulty. Try high-frequency sight words, CVC word families (cat, hat, bat, mat), days of the week, colours, classroom objects, or students' names. Pre-teach the words as a class before students find them independently.
Year 2 & Year 3
Move to Standard difficulty on a 10×10 or 12×12. Good word lists: weekly spelling groups (words with "igh", "-tion"), Science or HASS topic vocabulary (habitat, predator, lifecycle), word families with prefixes/suffixes (play → replay, playing, player), compound words, and contractions.
Year 4 & Year 5
Advanced difficulty on 12×12 or 15×15 grids with diagonals. Build lists of subject-specific terms (fraction, denominator, perimeter, symmetry), Latin/Greek roots (aqua, bio, geo, micro, tele), homophones (there/their/they're), or vocabulary from a current novel study.
Year 6
15×15 or 20×20 grids with more sophisticated vocabulary — NAPLAN-style words (analyse, evaluate, synthesise), etymology groups (Greek: democracy, philosophy, geography), unit of inquiry vocabulary, and transition-to-high-school terminology.
Tips from Australian teachers
- Differentiate with settings, not separate lists. Use the same words across three puzzle versions — small grid/Basic for struggling readers, medium/Standard for on-level, large/Advanced with diagonals for extension.
- Pair it with explicit instruction. A word search is practice, not teaching. Introduce vocabulary first; follow up by having students use three of the words in sentences.
- Use as a station. Word searches make a calm, independent literacy rotation task while you run guided reading groups.
- Keep it purposeful. The most effective puzzles use words students are currently learning — this week's spelling, current topic vocabulary, or sight words in focus.
Word search generator FAQ
Is the word search generator free?
Yes. You can create word search puzzles, preview them, and download printable PDFs with answer keys at no cost. A free TeachBuySell account gives you saving and sharing.
Can I use my own word list?
Yes. Type in any spelling list, topic vocabulary, or sight words. You can also pick from built-in Australian-curriculum themes or let the AI generate a themed list from a topic you enter.
What grid sizes are available?
Five sizes: 8×8, 10×10, 12×12, 15×15, and 20×20. Smaller grids suit younger students and quick activities. Larger grids (15×15 and 20×20) can hold up to 35 words.
Can I print the word search with an answer key?
Yes. When you download the PDF you can include a solution sheet that highlights every word — useful for relief teachers and for students who want to self-check.
How do the difficulty levels work?
Basic places words left-to-right only, which suits Foundation and Year 1. Standard adds vertical and backward placement. Advanced adds diagonals — best for Year 4 and up.
Are the word lists aligned to the Australian Curriculum?
Built-in themes and AI-generated lists are designed for Australian classrooms, and the year-level setting adjusts vocabulary complexity. For precise alignment, enter words from your current unit of work.
Can I make a word search for kids at home?
Yes — parents and tutors use the tool the same way teachers do. Pick an age-appropriate theme, set the grid to 8×8 or 10×10, and print. No account required for the basic puzzle download.
Does it work as a find-a-word template?
Yes. The output is a classic find-a-word: a letter grid, a word list, and an optional answer key — in a clean print layout that photocopies well.
Is this a word search maker, creator, or builder?
All the same thing. Whether you call it a word search generator, creator, maker, builder, find-a-word or wordfind, this is the tool — one printable PDF, your choice of words, themes, and grid size.
Can I save my word search as a custom template?
Yes. Saved puzzles stay in your TeachBuySell account, so you can re-open a custom word search and re-use the layout as a template for the next theme, class, or weekly spelling group.
