Why life-writing is key to student well-being

The final year of primary school is a key milestone, perhaps the most significant stage of a child’s life to this point.

Taking time in Year 6 to reflect is vital in supporting students to process all that’s brought them to this point and to build self-awareness. Building these skills now improves mental well-being and fosters positive reflective habits for success throughout life.


How it works:

  • Delivery/time allowance: The My Primary School Journey program is designed with flexibility in mind, to suit your school’s schedule over the course of the Year 6 timeline. Some schools use it every fortnight across the year; alternatively, the program could be implemented as a term’s focus, such as in Term 3 or Term 4 of Year 6.
  • For each of the 12 sessions, students engage with a new writing topic.
  • Allow around 20-30 minutes for students to reflect and write.
  • Use as a mindful activity to begin the day, as part of class activities, or during quiet moments of self-reflection.
