An interactive fraction wall for the whole class

Pick the rows you need, from 1 whole down to twelfths, and tap pieces to shade them. Show fractions, decimals or percentages on every piece, or hide the labels and ask the class to name them. Press Full screen to fill the interactive whiteboard, and print the same wall as an A4 PDF in colour, or as black lines for students to cut out.

How to use it in class

  • Which is bigger? Shade 1 third and 1 quarter and ask students to explain why the piece with the bigger number underneath is smaller.
  • Find the match: choose Line up and tap 3/4. Students predict which rows will line up before you reveal the outlined pieces.
  • Blank wall: turn the labels off, point to a piece and have students write its fraction, then its decimal, on a mini whiteboard.
  • Hands on: print the cut-out version, have students colour each row a different colour, cut the pieces and build their own wall on the desk.
  • Make a whole: shade pieces in different rows that add up to 1, such as 1/2, 1/4 and 2/8, and check against the whole.

Frequently asked questions

Is this fraction wall free?

Yes. The interactive wall, the coloured PDF and the cut-out PDF are free to use, print and photocopy for your class, with no sign-up.

What is a fraction wall?

A fraction wall is a set of bars the same length, one whole bar and then bars cut into halves, thirds, quarters and so on. Because every row is the same length, students can see that 2 quarters take up the same space as 1 half, and that 1 third is bigger than 1 quarter.

How do I show equivalent fractions on the wall?

Choose Line up, then tap a piece. A line drops from the end of that piece through every row, and each row with an edge on the line is outlined. The wall lists the matching fractions, such as 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8 = 5/10 = 6/12.

Can I show decimals and percentages instead of fractions?

Yes. Change the labels to decimals or percentages, or to none for a blank wall. Decimals that go on forever, like one third, are shown cut short with dots (0.33...) rather than rounded, so every label is true.

Which year levels use a fraction wall?

Fraction walls suit Years 2 to 6. In the Australian Curriculum (version 9), Year 4 students find equivalent fractions using related denominators, such as quarters and eighths, and start connecting fractions to decimals. Older students use the decimal and percentage labels.

Can I share the wall I set up?

Yes. The link in the address bar keeps your rows, labels, shading and line, so Copy link gives you a wall you can paste into a lesson plan or send to another teacher.
