Telling the time resources by Aussie teachers
An interactive analogue clock for teaching time
Drag the hands and the clock moves like a geared teaching clock. Turn on minute marks, the minutes around the edge, past and to, the time in words, a digital readout or 24-hour time, and switch each one off again as students grow more confident. Press Full screen to fill the interactive whiteboard.
How to use it in class
- Model it: wind the minute hand slowly from o'clock to half past and ask the class what the hour hand is doing.
- Past and to: turn on past and to, so students see that the right half of the clock is past the hour and the left half is to the next one.
- Quick quiz: start the quiz at the level your class is on and have students show the answer on mini whiteboards before you pick it.
- Set the clock: hand the whiteboard pen to a student and have them drag the hands to the time on the screen.
- Independent practice: print a worksheet at the same level, with the answer page for self-marking.

Frequently asked questions
Is this teaching clock free?
Yes. The interactive analogue clock, the quiz and the printable worksheets are free to use and photocopy for your class, with no sign-up.
Do the hands move together like a real clock?
Yes. The clock is geared: drag the minute hand once around and the hour hand moves on by one hour, just as it does on a classroom geared clock. You can also drag the hour hand, tap the face, or use the arrow keys.
What year levels learn to tell the time?
In the Australian Curriculum (version 9), Year 2 students read an analogue clock to the hour, half hour and quarter hour. Year 3 students describe how hours and minutes relate on analogue and digital clocks and read the time to the nearest minute. Year 5 students compare 12-hour and 24-hour time and convert between them.
How does the "What time is it?" quiz work?
Pick a level, from o'clock up to 24-hour time, and choose Read the clock or Set the clock. In Read the clock, students pick the right time from four choices, and the wrong choices are the mistakes students really make, such as reading the hands the wrong way round. In Set the clock, students drag the hands to the time and press Check.
Can I print telling the time worksheets?
Yes. Choose a level and either Write the time (the hands are drawn) or Draw the hands (the time is written), and download an A4 PDF of 12 clocks with an answer page. Press New clocks for a different sheet.
Why does the 24-hour quiz say morning or afternoon?
An analogue clock looks the same at 3:40 in the morning and 3:40 in the afternoon, so the 24-hour level tells students the part of the day. The wrong choices include the same time on the other side of midday, which is the most common 24-hour mistake.
